Russia insists on political settlement to end Syrian crisis

MOSCOW, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Russia sees no alternative to political solution toward ending the crisis in Syria, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Thursday.

During his meeting with Syrian Ambassador to Moscow Riyad Haddad, Bogdanov reaffirmed Moscow's stance on Syria, calling for a political settlement with "absolute respect for Syria's sovereignty," said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.

Outside players should not interfere with Syria's domestic affairs and disrupt the political process in that country, said the statement.

Haddad, for his part, confirmed Damascus's willingness to move in the same direction. He thanked Moscow for the delivery of another batch of humanitarian aid to the Syrian population, according to the statement.

Russia sent a plane loaded with 38 tons of sugar, canned fish and meat, and baby food to Syria on Thursday. It has also delivered 80 tons of humanitarian aid to Damascus in the past few months, said the ministry.
