Cameron to deliver delayed EU speech in London on Wednesday

LONDON, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister David Cameron will give his speech on Britain's future relations with the European Union (EU) in London Wednesday, a government spokesman said Monday.

Cameron postponed the much-anticipated speech last week because of the Algerian gas plant hostage crisis. The speech was originally scheduled for Friday in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

"Wednesday morning in London fits best with the Prime Minister's schedule," the spokesman said.

The spokesman said Cameron wanted to set out his views on Europe and may call other EU Leaders before delivering the speech.

According to extracts of the speech given to the media before it was postponed, Cameron was expected to say Britain could drift out of the EU unless the bloc meets key challenges.

Britons were tiring of the EU's "lack of democratic accountability", Cameron was expected to say, according to local media.

"If we don't address these challenges, the danger is that Europe will fail and the British people will drift towards the exit," Cameron planned to say.

"I do not want that to happen. I want the European Union to be a success and I want a relationship between Britain and the EU that keeps us in it," he said.
