CAIRO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) chief on Sunday discussed with U.S. president's assistant the latest developments of the Syrian crisis and the Middle East peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis, diplomatic sources at the AL told Xinhua.

The talks between AL Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi and Philip Gordon, special assistant of U.S. President Barack Obama and White House coordinator for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf Region, tackled the recent U.S.-Russian agreement on seeking a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict, the source said.

"Gordon informed Arabi of the details of the recent U.S.- Russian agreement on the necessity of resolving the Syrian crisis through peaceful means," the source said.

The discussions also addressed the latest developments of the Palestinian issue following the recent visit of an Arab ministerial delegation to Washington to revive the Middle East peace process.

Arabi said Saturday that the United States has asked the Arab delegation to amend the Arab Peace Initiative but the delegation declined the request.

The meeting between Arabi and Gordon comes ahead of an emergency meeting of the AL Council to discuss what they described as the Israeli aggression on Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Gordon, leading a high-level delegation, arrived in Cairo Saturday evening for a visit to hold talks with a number of Egyptian senior officials on the recent regional developments as well as the U.S.-Egyptian ties.
