PARIS, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Europe's leading airline Air France-KLM posted a 2.3-percent growth in passenger traffic last month driven by strong performance of Asian destinations, the flag carrier said Tuesday.

At the end of April, the airline recorded 6.638 million passengers, up by 1.9 percent from the same month last year "on the back of the opening of new long-haul routes."

Traffic in Asian networks was the company's star performer, generating 4.5 billion euros (5.7 billion U.S. dollars) compared to 4.11 billion euros recorded a year ago due to "significant capacity development with routes to Fukuoka (Japan) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) as well as added capacity to China."

Cargo activity of the French-Dutch joint venture lost ground over the period, but the load factor stood at 64.4 percent, slightly up by 0.3 percent.
