5.2-magnitude earthquake hits north-central Italy, one injured

MILAN, Italy, June 21 (Xinhua) -- One was injured in the 5.2-magnitude earthquake which struck north-central Italy on Friday, local media rrported.

The tremor, which occurred at 12:33 a.m. local time (10:33 GMT), was felt in northern regions of Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto and Liguria. The epicenter, with a depth of around 5 km, was localized in central Tuscany region.

It was reported that the shake triggered panic in several places, where crowds of people gathered on the streets.

There is a long history of earthquakes in the Mediterranean country, which is located at the meeting point of the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate and is characterized by considerable seismic and volcanic activity.

In May 2012, two major earthquakes occurred in northern Italy, causing 26 deaths and widespread damage, while in 2009 the ancient town of L'Aquila was struck by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake which killed more than 300 people.
