East Asia faces three major challenges: Yukio Hatoyama

BEIJING, June 28 (People's Daily Online) --East Asia faces three major challenges. All parts in this region should make an effort to build a stable road towards peace, security and prosperity, said former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama at World Peace Forum 2013 on Thursday in Beijing.

Challenge 1: Bringing the DPRK back to East Asian multi-lateral dialogue

In May 2013, the DPRK dispatched Choe Ryong Hae as a special envoy to China. During Choe’s meeting with President Xi Jinping, he said the DPRK was sincerely hoping to develop the country and was willing to cooperate with related sides to properly settle issues through the six-party talks. This was interpreted as a positive signal after the DPRK quit the six-party talks four years ago, according to Hatoyama.

“We should also try to normalize the US-DPRK and Japanese-DPRK ties,” said Hatoyama. “In order to achieve the true peace, we should build up trust among the DPRK, ROK and the U.S. Only in this way, will the DPRK have no reason to develop its nuclear weapons and missile program.”

Hatoyama also called for stronger multi-lateral dialogues in Northeast Asia by citing South Korean President Park Geunhye’s proposal. The U.S. and its partners in northeast Asia can start their cooperation from easy issues such as disaster relief and environmental protection so as to accumulate trust and expand cooperation. “The DPRK is welcomed to join this program,” he said.
