Snowden's father: "You are a modern day Paul Revere"

The father of US national security leaker Edward Snowden has written an open letter to his son. In it, he applauds Snowden for "summoning the American people to confront the growing danger of tyranny" and calls him a modern day Paul Revere.

The letter was signed jointly Tuesday by Lonnie Snowden and his lawyer, Bruce Fein. Fein said he received a call earlier from WikiLeaks founder and publisher Julian Assange.

The call was reportedly to relay a message from Snowden, asking that his father keep quiet. Snowden's father has expressed frustration at his inability to reach out directly to his son.

The elder Snowden has also said he’s concerned that the WikiLeaks supporters who have been helping his son seek asylum may not have his best interests at heart. Snowden's father has said he’d like his son to return to the US under the right circumstances.
