SINGAPORE, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The number of people who committed suicide last year in Singapore rose to 467, from 361 in 2011, suicide prevention organization Samaritans of Singapore said on Friday.

It was the highest in at least 20 years.

The most significant increase comes from the 20 to 29 age group. Suicide deaths among this group rose from 46 in 2011 to 83 last year.

A total of 95 people in their twenties were referred to the organization for attempting suicide.

"People in their twenties are exploring their identity, discovering new responsibilities and building their career and family, all of which can be very stressful," said Christine Wong, executive director of the organization.

Wong said the community plays an important role in destigmatizing suicide. Friends and family should let loved ones know that it is okay to talk about suicidal feelings and encourage people to seek help. The young people are vulnerable as they may hide their pain behind a facade, she added.
