Egypt's former Brotherhood chief ordered 4 days in custody

CAIRO, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's former Muslim Brotherhood ( MB) chief Mahdi Akef was ordered to remain in custody for four days pending investigations over charges of insulting the judicial authority, official MENA news agency reported Sunday.

Tharwat Hammad, the investigative judge delegated by Justice Ministry, also ordered the release of Mohamed Saad al-Katatni, head of the MB's Freedom and Justice Party, after fined him 5,000 Egyptian pounds (about 715 U.S. dollars) in the same case.

Both Brotherhood's leaders, along with others, were ordered to be arrested over inciting violence against protesters following the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi on July 3.

Akef claimed that he had made some comments to college students, but was later surprised to find them published on Kuwait-based al- Garida newspaper. Katatni, however, denied any claims over using improper words, stressing his respect for the Judiciary.

Katatni will stay in Torah prison over other charges, such as inciting the murder of protestors outside the MB's headquarters with the aim of terrorizing peaceful demonstrators.

In a related development, the prosecution has ordered to freeze assets of 14 leaders of the MB, the conservative Salafist group and Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya group, including the Brotherhood's top leader Mohamed Badie, the group's former general guide Mahdi Akef, the FJP's deputy head Essam al-Erian, Mohamed al-Beltagi, and Islamic preacher Safwat Hegazi.

They were suspected of inciting violence outside the Republican Guards House in Cairo and Nahdah Square in Giza, which left at least 60 killed.

The prosecution started Saturday to examine complaints against Morsi and several senior members of the MB's party and the MB guidance bureau over their involvement in spying and murdering protesters, among other charges, MENA quoted the prosecution spokesman Adel Saad as saying.

On July 4 , the prosecution also ordered a travel ban on Morsi and another 35 figures of the MB over investigations on killing protesters.
