6 killed, 33 injured in clashes near Cairo University

CAIRO, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Six people were killed and 33 others injured in clashes that erupted early Tuesday between supporters and opponents of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in the vicinity of Cairo University, Giza governorate, the health ministry said in a statement.

The statement added that clashes also broke out between the two sides in Tahrir square of downtown Cairo and Rabia al-Adawaeya square of Nasr City, leaving nine people injured.

Late on Monday, three people were killed and 44 others injured in Tahrir square and Qalioubeya's Qalioub city as protesters from both sides exchanged rocks and birdshots, while gunshots were also heard in these areas.

The clashes erupted despite that Egypt's interim President Adli Mansour called for national reconciliation in a televised speech on Monday evening. "We want to open a new page, free of prejudice, hatred and division," he said.
