Almost half of New Zealanders struggle on incomes: survey

WELLINGTON, Aug. 13 -- Almost half of New Zealanders are struggling to get by with just enough or not enough income, according to the results of a government social survey released Tuesday.

It found 33.1 percent of about 8,500 respondents said they had just enough income to get by while 15.3 percent said they had not enough money, according to Statistics New Zealand, which conducted the survey.

However, a fifth of New Zealanders said they had good health, enough money, good housing, and didn't feel lonely, while one in 20 New Zealanders said they had neither good health, nor enough money, nor good housing, and said they had felt lonely in the past four weeks.

"Most New Zealanders appear to be content with their lives, with 87 percent of the population reporting they were satisfied or very satisfied with their lives overall. This is above the OECD ( Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) average, and similar to Australia, the United States and Canada," New Zealand General Social Survey (NZGSS) manager Philip Walker said in a statement.
