A subcommittee meeting of the Commission for the Conservation and Management of Highly Migratory Fish Stocks in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPFC) Thursday reached a broad agreement to cut catches of young bluefin tuna by 15 percent, local press reported.

On the final day of the four-day meeting, held in the southwestern Japanese city of Fukuoka, the WCPFC members, including China and the United States, agreed to reduce the catch amount of bluefin tuna aged below 3 years in the Pacific Ocean by 15 percent in 2014, compared with the average amount between 2002 and 2004, although the United States had initially proposed a 25- percent reduction, according to Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK), Japan's public broadcaster.

A spokesperson for the Japanese Fisheries Agency also said that the accord will be finalized at the commission's annual conference in December in Australia, adding that South Korea deferred its early decision during the Fukuoka meeting.

Local environmentalists, meanwhile, warned that even the expected reduction would not stop overfishing.
