Incheon, Oct. 30 (People's Daily Online) -- 2013 Asia Media Forum, themed "Role and Responsibility of Media in the 21st Century", is held in Incheon, South Korea today. About 100 journalists from 10 countries, i.e. Cambodia, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and South Korea attended this forum.
Mr. Jun Youngwoo, President of Incheon International Relations Foundation (IIRF), gave an opening speech. He said that the forum is aimed at increasing and enhancing the mutual understanding and cooperation opportunities among journalists in Asian region. Asia has been taking more critical roles in world economy and politics over the past few decades, and it is meaningful and important for Asian journalists to gather together to discuss "Role and Responsibility of Media" and to come up with practical solutions, he said.
Mr. Youn Kwansuk, Democratic Party Member of the National Assembly of ROK cited a saying to express his view on the role of media. He said: "The Pen is mightier than the sword", and media should fulfill its role and responsibility to adapt to the changes in people's consciousness and social atmosphere. Moreover, ceaseless efforts for self-renovation are also needed for media to survive in the digital age. As the platforms are being diversified, media's role and the importance of information are getting more significant than ever.
Mr. Kim Kyoheung, Deputy Mayor for Political Affairs of Incheon Metropolitan City made a brief introduction about Incheon. The city has been preparing to host the "17th Asia Games INCHEON 2014", the sports festival for 4 billion Asian people. Incheon is also devoting to transform into a leading green growth city along with the Incheon Free Economic Zone and the Green Climate Fund secretariat. And he was hoping to see various opinions and thoughts being shared at this forum.
Mr. Cha Duhyeon, Executive Vice-President of Korea Foundation said in his speech that media's role in making the future images into reality is more important than anything. The knowledge and information era of the 21st century provides numerous benefits with enormous amounts of information. 20 years ago, the information and knowledge about other countries, other cultures, and other regions were regarded as the domains of experts and scholars. But now people are living in an age of high technology that all sorts of information and thoughts can be shared in real time, and the world has become a space where more people can actively communicate and develop mutual understanding. Media workers should work hard to create better society and culture as the information provider in the 21st century. He hoped that the forum would be a foundation for building a happier world and better Asia through the process of collecting wisdom by working together.
During the forum, journalists will also discuss on several topics, for example, "Meaning o ASEAN Integration and Role of Media", "Traditional Journalism and Digital Innovation: Difference and Balance", and "Culture and Media in Global Age".
