Abu Sayyaf key member killed in southern Philippines

MANILA, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior member of the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group was killed in a shootout with police in southern Philippine province of Sulu on Monday.

The suspect, Fraser Hajan, resisted arrest and fired at police at a remote village in Parang town, according to Sulu provincial police office.

The clash toop place when the special action force of police swooped down on Nunukan village at 1:15 a.m. to capture Hajan, a high-ranking member of Abu Sayyaf group.

Police said the suspect was brought to a nearby hospital where he died upon arrival.

The 380-strong Abu Sayyaf, founded in the early 1990s, is a terrorist group operating in the southern Philippines.
