TOKYO, April 16 -- A fishery committee of the Japanese lower house on Wednesday adopted a resolution, urging the government to continue whaling in the Antarctic and consider"every possibly option"to preserve the tradition of whaling, local media reported.

The House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said in the resolution that the government should draw up a new whaling program and should seek necessary diplomatic steps to make Japan never be brought again to the International Court of Justice by any anti-whaling country, said Japan's Kyodo News.

The resolution also said the government should consider "every possible option" to preserve the "tradition" of whaling, while calling for continued supply of whale meat to the local market, said the report.

On Tuesday, Japanese Fishery Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said that he is determined to"maintain the solid policy of preserving whale-eating culture and securing of whale meat."

Hayashi made the remarks during a meeting with the president of a research whaling company, despite a recent order by the International Court of Justice that asked Japan to halt its whaling activities in the Antarctic.

The Japanese government is mulling whether to carry out coastal whaling in the Pacific as scheduled from late April.

Japan's whaling, which is under the banner of scientific research, is controversial worldwide as anti-whaling community considers Japan's whaling as a commercial activity.

Whale meat can be found in Japanese supermarkets with some of its label saying that "eating whale is Japanese culture."
