The Chinese mainland remains out of Apple Inc's prioritized markets, as the company once again excluded it from its first batch of countries and regions to receive the new iPhone unveiled Wednesday in the US.
Market watchers, however, say the taller and thinner iPhone 5 is unlikely to be so popular in the mainland market, owning to factors including its unexciting design.
"The design could hardly live up to expectations, and there is no radical technology innovation, either," Wang Yang, director of China research at consultancy IHS iSuppli in Shanghai, told the Global Times Thursday. "The new iPhone won't help boost its sales in the mainland market," said Wang.
"There are incremental improvements from the iPhone 4S, but not much surprise," CK Lu, senior analyst for mobile devices at the US-based market research firm Gartner Inc in Taipei, told the Global Times.
"I think in mature markets it will still be popular. But in the Chinese market, the advantage of the new iPhone such as LTE and services are less meaningful for Chinese consumers. We are relatively cautious about the iPhone 5's sales in the country," Lu remarked.
