German inflation slows in January

BERLIN, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- German's January consumer price index slowed to 1.7 percent from the 2.0 level recorded in the previous month , official data showed on Wednesday.

It was the lowest inflation rate since June 2012, when the rate of price increase also amounted to 1.7 percent, according to the Wiesbaden-based Destatis.

The inflation in January was influenced mainly by higher food and energy prices. Food prices rose 4.5 percent in January 2013 compared with January 2012, while energy prices went up 3.9 percent over the same period.

The harmonized index of consumer prices for Germany, calculated as European Central Bank's inflation yardstick, rose by 1.9 percent in January 2013 on January 2012, lower than the ECB's inflation maintenance level of 2.0 percent over the medium term. Compared with December 2012, the index fell by 0.7 percent.
