PHNOM PENH, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Qatar is going to promote bilateral relations and cooperation with Cambodia in trade, investment and tourism for mutual benefits, according to Bangkok- based Qatar ambassador to Cambodia Jabor Bin Ali Aldosari Friday.

Speaking during a meeting with Cambodian finance minister Keat Chhon in Phnom Penh, Jabor Bin Ali Aldosari said that Qatar wanted to sign an agreement on bilateral investment promotion and protection with Cambodia in order to boost bilateral economic ties, said a press release from Cambodia's Finance Ministry on Friday.

The ambassador also invited Keat Chhon to visit Qatar and hoped that such agreement would be signed on the occasion of his visit.

He also expressed Qatar's desire to open a commercial bank in Cambodia, the press release said.

Keat Chhon promised to finalize the draft agreement on bilateral investment promotion and protection as soon as possible in order to enable both countries to sign in the near future.

The minister said that even though Cambodia has up to 32 commercial banks, the country still welcomes new banks, especially from new partner countries.

Bilateral relations between Cambodia and Qatar in trade and investment are relatively small. On tourism side, only 70 tourists from Qatar visited Cambodia last year, according to a tourism report.

Jabor Bin Ali Aldosari visited Cambodia for three days to join the inaugural flight of Qatar Airways to Cambodia on Wednesday.

The airline operates daily flights from Doha to Phnom Penh via Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
