For Huang Kai-Lun, the Asian Youth Games could be a perfect opportunity for gaining international exposure, but his father had to pay dearly for encouraging his son to take up judo.
Huang Kai-Lun's father has a strong influence on him as it was him who introduced him to judo, but got demoted after moving from Chiayi to New Taipei which had a better judo school there.
"Huang did not want to take up judo first. It was his father Huang Jian-Long who is one of the top judokas in the region who asked him to start practising judo. So he started practising judo from his childhood," said Chinese Taipei coach Huang Cheng-Yao.
But that cost his father a lot who lost his position and was demoted for opting to transfer to another place to seek better judo training for his son. The passion for judo and his wish to see his son following in his footstep, however, could not stop him from the sacrifice he had to make.
"He (Huang Kai-Lun's father) is a policeman. He got himself transferred from Chiayi to a place called New Taipei as there was a good judo school. He was demoted and asked to act as an instructor. He bore all that and this is how Huang started judo," Huang Cheng-Yao said.
Huang Kai-Lun has not disappointed his father as he has fared reasonably well at the Games in the 81kg competitions.
Huang Cheng-Yao believes his trainee's performance is impressive since it is the first time he has been participating in a competition outside Chinese Taipei.
"It is Huang's first time that he is taking part in any competition outside Chinese Taipei. So he naturally feels very nervous and stressed. I told him before the second preliminary round match against Zhang Xin (China) that if he feels nervous, he would not be able to win."
Huang Kai-Lun got the better of Vietnam's Pham Thanhtin by ippon in the first preliminary round before defeating Zhang Xin by yuko in the second round. He lost to An Jaesang of South Korea in the quarterfinals by ippon. He lost to Lain Htone of Malaysia by yuko in the repechage contest to finish at seventh place.
