The organizing committee of Sochi Winter Olympics said Thursday that up to 25,000 volunteers will be working at the Games.

Dec. 5 is the International Volunteer Day celebrated since 1985.

According to the Sochi 2014 website, volunteers come to the Games from 26 recruiting and training centers across Russia.

About 2,000 volunteers come from other countries, mostly from the United States, Canada, Ukraine, Britain and Kazakhstan.

The team also recruited several volunteers from Japan, New Zealand, Cameroon, Congo and Pakistan.

The average age of volunteers is 25, among them 60 percent are men and 40 percent women, the committee said. About 930 volunteers are in their 60s.

Approximately 60 percent of the total number of volunteers will work at the Olympic coastal cluster venues, primarily at the Fisht Olympic Stadium, and 40 percent will work in the mountain cluster, mainly at the Laura Cross-Country Ski and Biathlon Center.

Recruitment of volunteers was carried out through 26 volunteer centers established at the educational institutions across Russia selected on a competitive basis.

A volunteer can be anyone, who as of January 6, 2014 will be 18 to 80 years old.

The 22nd Winter Olympics are due to take place on Feb. 7-23 with 98 sets of medals to be contested.
