The "godfather of Chinese rock 'n' roll", Cui Jian, said: "Whenever you see a show from Ershou Meigui (Second Hand Rose), the visual and sound impacts are firsthand."
The band's lead singer and founder Liang Long, a strong, 1.8-meter tall man from Northeast China, appears onstage with a shaved head, tight cheongsam, heavy makeup and high heels.
Liang says it gives him the urge to act and sing. Founded in 2002, the band's unique brand of hard folk is genuinely homegrown, melding heavy guitars with old Chinese horns and percussion.
The band's three albums feature shrill tones - like those of Peking Opera - and sharp and critical lyrics.
