The Pompidou exhibit in Shanghai caps off another exciting year for art both in China and across the globe. As 2012 draws to an end, let's take a look back at the annual highlights from the world of art.

The art year began in New York with a major new exhibition by British artist Damien Hirst. The conceptual artist presented a monumental work containing 25,781 spots, each measuring only 1 millimeter in diameter, with no single color repeated.

In May, some of the world’s top artists and most talented newcomers went on display side-by-side at the annual Hong Kong Art Fair. A large installation of colorful works by octogenarian Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama had a prominent place at the event.
