Sunday is the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, the Kitchen God Festival. But Chinese often call it Xiaonian, or Little New Year. After this day, people begin preparing for the real Chinese New Year. The holiday travel rush is expected to reach its peak in the next few days.
As the Chinese proverb says, a timely snow promises a fruitful year, and snow has fallen in northern China on the Kitchen God Festival.
The heavy snow in Beijing today is not damping the enthusiasm of travellers heading home for family reunions. Authorities have called on transportation departments to take measures to guard against accidents, so travellers can enjoy a pleasant and safe journey home.
Authorities have also made preparations for the travel rush expected after this day. Shanghai railway stations added 68 more trains to cope with the increasing passengers. Order in the stations has been maintained despite the passenger volume reached a record-breaking 320 thousand on Saturday.
