Hongkou tunes into music valley project

(Shanghai Daily)

08:08, June 06, 2013

Hongkou District plans to build Shanghai Music Valley, providing a place for concerts and other live performances while also attracting musicians, record labels and artists, district officials said yesterday. The project will be built at a historic preservation zone in the north Bund area that features the city's biggest shikumen compounds, said Li Guohua, deputy director of Hongkou.

The valley will be the size of about 40 football fields.

Li told a forum that Shanghai Music Valley will feature trendy art studios in narrow alleys, sharing similarities with Tianzifang in downtown area.

Several buildings will be revamped for the project including a triangular structure that looks like a piano and the former theater of Jiaxing neighborhood.

Factories and firms inside the buildings will be relocated to make way for music and art companies. A 3D light show with music is also planned.

Officials didn't give a time frame for the project or reveal how much it will cost.
