The convergence of art and industry

An Italian artist known as Sissi is hosting a solo exhibition titled "Aspiranti Aspiratori" at Aike-Dellarco at M50.

The exhibition is a convergence of art and industry as Sissi was tasked with generating new reflections on the theme of air purification by Elica, a company that makes built-in kitchen appliances such as range hoods, according to exhibition curator Marcello Smarrelli.

Sissi stayed at the company's factory in Milan for one year. During that time she produced drawings, collages and sculptures that feature in this exhibition.

"I initiated a new concept, which I call 'organic industry,' out of which a new methodology of interaction between art and industry developed," Sissi said.

Smarelli was effusive in his praise of the artist.

"Always creating surprising shapes and materials, the language and aesthetic taste of Sissi are highly explosive and these change the DNA of a thing," he said. "I am sure the viewers will be impressed by her imagination and creativity inside the industry scope."

This exhibition also showcases Sissi's Aspiranti Aspiratori, 10 objects she believes can be used as air purifiers. Three of the 10 Aspiranti Aspiratori will be at the exhibit along with the video "Casting," which tells the story of how the project evolved.

Sissi's drawings show in great detail the design and realization phase of the project.

Aspiranti Aspiratori has previously toured the Museum of Modern Art in Bologna and the 51st Milan International Design Week in 2012.

Born in Bologna in 1977, Sissi is an up-and-coming artist who graduated from the Academy of Arts in her hometown.

She now lives and works in both Bologna and New York City. Sissi has won the Gotham Prize, presented by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2012, and the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome in 2006.
