The Edinburgh International Festival opened Friday evening and a production of Shakespeare by a Chinese theater group grabbed audience's attention.

Susie Burnett, head of communications for the Festival, told Xinhua Friday afternoon, "The production of Shakespeare's 'Coriolanus' by the Beijing People's Art Theatre has really captured imaginations. We have had to put extra seats on for it."

Burnett said "Coriolanus" was playing at the Edinburgh Playhouse, a 3,000-seat venue.

"It has really grabbed peoples' attentions," said Burnett.

She added that many of the Festival's productions opened this weekend.

The start of the festival was marked with the unveiling of a media installation by a Republic of Korea artist outside the main Festival venue in the city center in the early evening.

Korean artist Hyung Su Kim flicked the switch on his installation "Media Skins" outside the Usher Hall, the most prestigious venue at the Festival.

Using visuals captured through satellites of a number of places worldwide, Kim has created a kaleidoscopic film.

The film has an original soundtrack based on the traditional Scottish song "The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond" and the traditional Korean song "Arirang."

He was inspired by Scottish physicist, mathematician, astronomer and inventor David Brewster who invented the kaleidoscope in 1817.

Other Festival highlights include several modern dance masterpieces from the LA Dance Project, masterminded by Benjamin Millepied who choreographed and starred in the hit film "Black Swan."

Another dance highlight is the Jose Montalvo Company from France performing "Don Quichotte du Trocadero."

"What really strikes me, partly because of our theme of arts and technology and how they interact, is that there is something for everyone, whether it be opera, theater, music, or dance, talks or discussions," said Burnett.

The Festival will continue until Sept. 1.
