VARNA, Bulgaria, Aug. 31 -- Panorama of Chinese cinema kicked off here on Saturday as a part of the 21st International Film Festival "Love is Folly", one of the three largest movie festivals in Bulgaria.

Five Chinese very award-winning films produced from 2006 to 2011, including Let the Bullets Fly, Little Big Soldier, The Knot, And the Spring Comes, and Buddha Mountain will be screened during the Panorama.

In addition, Zhang Meng's film The Piano in the Factory which grabbed the Film Critic's Award at Shanghai 2012 and Miami 2011 Grand Prix, will compete for the Grand Prix "Golden Aphrodite" at the festival in Varna.

Liu Yonghong, cultural counselor at the Chinese embassy in Sofia, said at the opening ceremony of the Panorama of Chinese cinema that these six Chinese films from various viewpoints expressed the development of contemporary Chinese society.

He was hoping that by watching Chinese movies, Bulgarian viewers would explore Chinese history, culture and contemporary Chinese society, Liu said.

Chinese film industry had more than 100 years of history and it looked like the history of China in the last 100 years, Liu said at a press conference earlier on Saturday.

For example, Liu said, from 1905 to 2006 China produced some 100 feature films a year, but after 2006, the number increased to more than 600, and the country currently ranked third in the world.

Prof. Alexander Grozev, Artistic Director of the International Film Festival "Love is Folly", has told Xinhua that visible advance of the Chinese cinema was noticed over the last decade.

"I think it is no accident: on the one hand, the great cultural traditions of this country, on the other hand -- a very interesting generation of filmmakers make their movies, which are specifically Chinese as a way of thinking, as a way of expression, and this attracts the interest not only of the critique but also the general public," Grozev said.

So far as Grozev remembered, at all major festivals where a Chinese film was shown, it always received a reward. This itself was an indication of the success of Chinese cinema, he said.
