BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Monday called for technology to play a greater role in further developing the nation's forestry sector.

Hui made the comments while attending a meeting on forestry technology, held in Beijing.

The vice premier urged the establishment of an advanced forestry technology system to upgrade the sector's ability to innovate.

He said China's forestry sector has developed fast over the past decade, with the number of forests increasing and their quality improving each year. The desertified land area has also decreased year by year, Hui added.

The official called these achievements an historic transformation, as the nation has contained the trend of ecological degradation.

Hui stressed that improvements in forestry technology are vital to the further development of the sector.

He urged increased investment in forestry technology and deepened institutional reform to pave way for the technological development.
