BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Li Xuge, former commander of China's strategic troop, the Second Artillery Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), passed away here early this month. He was 85.
Officials from relevant central departments comforted him during his illness and expressed their condolences after his death, according to official sources.
Li, a native of Luannan County in north China's Hebei Province, joined the Chinese revolution and the armed forces led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1943. He became a Party member one year later. Li had been with the CPC-led armed forces ever since.
Since 1949, the year of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Li had taken a number of important positions, such as the director of the office of the national nuclear experiment commission and deputy commander of the Second Artillery Corps. In 1988, he became a lieutenant general.
Li was a member of the 13th CPC Central Committee, a deputy to the 13th and 14th national congresses and a member of the Standing Committee of the 8th National People's Congress (NPC).
