CHENGDU, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Zhou Yongkang, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), has called on law enforcers to maintain social harmony and stability ahead of the upcoming CPC's 18th National Congress.

Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks during his two-day inspection tour of southwest China's Sichuan Province that ended on Monday.

Zhou visited the procuratorial, judicial and police departments in the provincial capital of Chengdu.

When meeting with representatives from these departments, Zhou urged them to honestly carry out their legal responsibilities by enhancing law enforcement, providing better service for the people, dissolving disputes, and maintaining justice, social harmony and stability.

He asked for major achievements from them to mark the CPC's 18th National Congress, which is scheduled to start on Nov. 8.

After hearing a report at the Sichuan provincial State Security Bureau, Zhou asked personnel in the field to "enhance their capabilities and the building of a people's defence line for state security so as to contribute more to state security and social and political stability."

During his inspection, Zhou also visited a high-tech park specialized in research and development of optical communication products, a local community, and examined a new type of tent especially designed for herders in Sichuan's Tibetan-populated areas.

Zhou commended Sichuan's economic and social development after the devastating earthquake that jolted the region in May 2008, hailing the reconstruction of the province as a miracle.

He expressed hope that Sichuan can speed up its efforts to build itself into a center of economic development in China's west, consolidate its achievements in post-quake reconstruction, and strive to create a happier life for local residents.
