The Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress has passed the Law on Mental Health. The law aims to better protect the rights and interests of patients, especially those who cannot get access to medical treatment in rural areas.
It also provides better protection to the privacy of the patients. It prohibits abuses of compulsory inpatient treatment. In addition, it bans any physical exam for diagnosis of mental disorder against people’s wills, and stipulates that any violators of the law will bear civil or even criminal liabilities.
The law also calls for more government supervision of medical workers at mental health institutions, as well as a special allowance for them.
