BEIJING, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Wang Yang on Wednesday urged further reforms to ensure food and drug safety.

All local governments should accelerate related reforms and establish a strict supervision system that covers the production, transportation and sale of food and drugs, Wang said at a meeting on food and drug safety.

Food and drug safety is related to public health and is an important economic and political issue, Wang said.

Wang called for a special campaign to overhaul the food and drug industries, as well as severely punish violators.

He also urged local governments to be responsible for food and drug safety in their jurisdictions, as well as called for relevant departments to effectively enhance the management of food and drug safety.
