BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese military official Wednesday called for efforts to modernize the military and promote the military's loyalty to the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Fan Changlong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), urged the military to enhance its combat capability while speaking at a graduation ceremony at the National Defense University.

Fan, who is also a Political Bureau member of the CPC Central Committee, asked the military to unswervingly uphold a fundamental principle that states that the CPC exercises absolute leadership over the military.

When addressing the graduates, Fan asked them to maintain a high degree of consistency with the CPC Central Committee in their thoughts, politics and actions.

In his speech, Fan urged the military to maintain preparedness, as well as called on commanders and commanding organs at all levels to be deeply involved in military combat preparation and be able to lead troops to fight and win in case of need.
