China-U.S. first joint actual-troop disaster-relief drill unveiled in Hawaii

HAWAII, November 14 (ChinaMil) -- The workshop and the first joint actual-troop drill of China-U.S. military humanitarian assistance and disaster reduction was unveiled at the U.S. Bellows barracks on the Oahu Island, Hawaii, at 10:00, local time, on November 12, 2013.

The drill fell into three parts, namely, discussions and exchanges, in-door deducing and actual-troop drill. A total of 100-odd people took part in the drill.

Maj. Gen. Gary M. Hara, deputy commander of the U.S. Army Pacific Command (USAPAC), and Rear Admiral Li Ji, deputy director-general of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of the People's Republic of China, addressed the meeting respectively.

Li Ji expressed that the workshop and the joint actual-troop drill will play a positive role in enhancing mutual understanding and mutual trust, expanding bilateral pragmatic cooperation in non-traditional security fields, and promoting the relations between the two militaries and even the new-type relationship between the two countries.

After the opening ceremony, experts of the two sides discussed and exchanged views with each other. The U.S. side gave a briefing on its support for disaster-relief operations and the humanitarian assistance and disaster reduction drill, etc., and the Chinese side gave a briefing on the PLA's disaster-relief work in the Lushan earthquake in Sichuan province and the communication and coordination mechanism for military-civilian joint disaster prevention and reduction, etc.

According to the drill plan, the participating troops of the two sides displayed their professional equipment for search, forcible entry, top bracing, high-altitude rescue and medical aid, and exchanged with each other on performance characteristics and usage of earthquake rescue equipment. Afterwards, the troops exchanged their views on professional skills at top bracing and high-altitude rescue. Through the exchanges, they learnt from each other related experience and practices in professional fields, laying foundation for cooperation in next joint operation.
