KUNMING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Villagers in southwest China's Yunnan Province rescued eight Myanmar people near the China-Myanmar border after a ship overturned in the Lancang-Mekong River on Sunday afternoon, said local port authorities.
Shortly after noon on Sunday, the Myanmar-registered ship capsized just 10 meters after departing from a Myanmar village port about five km from Mengla County of Yunnan's Xishuangbanna prefecture, according to the county's port bureau.
There were about 25 people, mostly Myanmar pupils who study in a school in Mengla's Guanlei Village, on board when the accident happened.
Guanlei villagers quickly started the rescue with two civil ships. Of the eight rescued people, one was an adult and another seven were children.
A rescue of the people thought to be still in the water is under way.
