Clearing up doubts on "Golden Rice" in Jiangsu

(People's Daily Online)

14:54, September 12, 2012

Recently, a rumor about a large quantity of genetically modified rice, the "Golden Rice," planted in Hai"an of Jiangsu province, appeared on the Internet. It also exposed that a local company was suspected of supplying the genetically modified (GM) "Golden Rice" to a primary school of Hunan to do experiments.

Was the "Golden Rice" planted in Hai"an County? Does the local government know about it? Regarding these questions, the People's Daily reporter began an investigation.

Secret inquiries

On the morning of Sept. 6, the reporter drove to Longzheng town, Hai"an County, Nantong city, Jiangsu province and made a secret inquiry there.

At Group 5, Jianshe village, Longzheng County, the reporter saw a stretch of eye-catching rice field enclosed by fences and rows of pest control lamps set up at the banks. A large sign was erected beside the rice field, reading "Organic Gold Rice Production Base." In addition, the sign also told people that it is the organic rice demonstration base of Jiangsu province and is invested and established by Nantong Hundred Tastes Food Co., Lid.

A 69-year-old farmer called Wang Zhengrong who lives nearby pointed to the farmland and said, "The rice is good but very expensive, more than 20 yuan per kilogram. It does not use pesticides and we are hired to weed." Pulling out an ear of rice and breaking off its yellow husk, the reporter saw milky white rice. Wang said that the rice will be harvested about a month later and the mature rice is also white.
