Media exposes quality problems of Zhuhai Hengqin Bridge

In response to media's exposure of the exposed reinforcing steel bars caused by cement detachment and rusting on railings of Hengqin Bridge, the only channel linking Zhuhai's Hengqin New Area and downtown, Zhuhai Transportation Administration held a news conference on the afternoon of October 13, claiming that the above mentioned problems may be related to previous construction quality and sea erosion, but the bridge was safe.

Zhuhai Hengqin Bridge, which had attracted a total investment of 320 million yuan, is a long span bridge over Maliuzhou Waterway, from the Hongwan'an Free Trade Zone and Avenue de Praia Grande in the north and roundabout highway of Hengqin New Area in the south.

The bridge is 1,425 meters long and 31 meters wide. It has six lanes, a two-meter-wide separation belt in the middle and two-meter-wide sidewalks at both sides.

Gu Shengjie, head of Zhuhai Transportation Administration, said that generally speaking, these railings have no risk in structure, and can still play the roles of enclosure and separation.

In 2007 and 2010, the administration had entrusted Guang two companies to conduct special inspections for the bridge. They said the underwater structure was safe despite a number of defects. The overall technical condition of its upper structure was rated to be class II; meanwhile the static loading test proved it could meet normal service conditions.
