Symposium commemorates late Chinese political advisor

BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- A symposium was held Monday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ma Wenrui, former vice chairman of the country's top advisory body.

Ma, born in November 1912, served as the vice chairman of the sixth and seventh Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee. He died in 2004, suffering ill health.

At the symposium, Wang Gang, vice chairman of the CPPCC, praised Ma for his service and his contribution to the liberation of Chinese people during the revolutionary war, socialism with Chinese characteristics as well as the reform and opening-up drive.

Wang urged others to learn from Ma's loyalty to the Party's cause, his hardworking spirit and his noble mind to serve the people.

Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC, also attended the symposium.

In a statement released after the seminar, Ma was described as "an excellent member of the Communist Party of China (CPC), a loyal Communist fighter, a long-tested proletarian revolutionary and an outstanding leader of the Party's political work."
