Female students ask more toilets

HANGZHOU - Chinese students are asking more female toilets at universities, complaining that the unreasonable 1:1 ratio of male and female toilets have frustrated girls to find restrooms.

Student representatives from 12 normal universities across the country wrote to their respective presidents on the World Toilet Day, which falls on November 19, urging their efforts to solve the problem.

Xia Jiawei, a student from Hangzhou Normal University in east China's Zhejiang Province, said female students at her university are seven times of males, yet the numbers of male and female toilets are the same.

"I have to rush to toilet as soon as classes end, otherwise I might wait in long queues," Xia said.

"We don't expect the ratio of male and female toilets is compatible with that of male and female students, but the status quo in girl-dominated schools is obviously unreasonable," Xia said.

It was not the first time that female students demanded an increase of female toilets in campus.

In February, several female students from Guangzhou in south China's Guangdong Province lodged performance art of "occupying male toilets" to raise attention from people.

In 2001, the World Toilet Organization declared its founding day on November 19 as the World Toilet Day. The non-profit organization is committed to improving toilet and sanitation conditions worldwide.
