8 found dead after landslide in SW China

KUNMING - Eight residents have been confirmed dead and one person injured after a landslide hit a village Friday in Southwest China's Yunnan province, local authorities said.

The disaster occurred around 8:00 a.m. in the village of Gaopo, Zhenxiong county of Zhaotong City. The village has 67 residents of 16 families. Every house in the village was destroyed, and about 37 people are still unaccounted for, possibly trapped by the landslide.

A rescue team has been organized by the local government, and rescue efforts are under way.
