The daily flag raising ceremony at Tian'anmen Square is conducted by the national flag guards. The guards take the responsibility of raising and lowering the Five-Star Red Flag to express their respects and patriotic sentiments to the country.

The photos show former leaders of Lei Feng Squad raising national flag with the national flag guards. After flag raising ceremony, a member of Lei Feng Squad took an oath in front of the national flag, vowing to inherit and carry forward the spirit of Lei Feng. Lei is a role model serviceman in China, and Chinese are encouraged to emulate his selflessness, modesty and devotion to the country. On Jan. 7, 1963, the squad Lei Feng once served in was named Lei Feng Squad by the defense ministry.
