Jailed tycoon files appeal in E China

HANGZHOU, Feb.22 (Xinhua) -- A businesswoman sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for financial fraud has filed an appeal to the country's top court, her father said Friday.

An appeal document was mailed to the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate and the Higher People's Court of Zhejiang on Wednesday, said Wu Yongzheng, father of Wu Ying, a 32-year-old tycoon convicted of cheating investors out of 380 million yuan (60.2 million U.S. dollars) from May 2005 to January 2007 in private lending scams.

According to the appeal, the original verdict undervalued Wu's assets. It also said she had committed no financial fraud and demanded that Wu be declared innocent.

Wu was initially sentenced to death in 2009. After her case sparked heated debate over the country's fund-raising system, her sentence was reduced to death with a two-year reprieve following a retrial in May 2012.
