NANJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Huang Sheng, a former deputy governor of east China's Shandong Province, stood trial Monday on charges of accepting bribes.

The case was heard at the intermediate people's court in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.

According to the municipal people's procuratorate, from the latter half of 1998 to August 2011, Huang abused his official positions as the mayor and Communist Party of China (CPC) chief of Dezhou, as well as vice governor of Shandong, to obtain benefits for others in their business operations and promotions.

He accepted bribes worth more than 12.23 million yuan (about 1.97 million U.S. dollars), prosecutors said.

The trial was open to the public, with reporters and relatives of Huang present.

The court said the verdict will be announced at a later date.
