An official with Beijing traffic bureau said that from Monday, pedestrians, cyclists and those who have electric bikes or pedicabs will be fined or punished for jaywalking.

Jiang Jing, media officer with Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, said pedestrians will be fined 10 yuan ($1.6) and non-vehicle drivers will be fined 20 yuan for jaywalking.

"We'll first pilot the fines and punishments along the 150 major roads in Beijing," said Jiang.

Jaywalkers will be "educated" before being fined, said Jiang. "If they don't listen, we'll fine them. If they listen to the warnings, they won't be punished."
