Several recent reports concerning the quality of Nongfu Spring Water have aroused public concern.

An expert in the drinking water field revealed that standards of bottled mineral water produced by Nongfu Spring Co., Ltd. were even lower than tap water, Beijing Times reported Wednesday.

According to the expert, the production standards of bottled water should be at least equal to or stricter than the GB 5749 standards, which are regarded as the basic and lowest standards for drinking water quality.

However, Nongfu Spring implemented the standards of east China's Zhejiang Province for bottled water, which were far lower than the GB5 749 standards regarding the contents of heavy metal and harmful substances in the water.

Also, according to the Management Measures for Local Food Safety Standards issued by the Ministry of Health in 2011, the beverage manufacturer should apply the local standards of Guangdong Province, which is the manufacturing location of the bottled mineral water.

Nongfu Spring has not responded to questions from Beijing Times.
