Barber shop attack lands man in court

(Global Times)

A district court sentenced a man suffering from schizophrenia to one year of probation for assaulting a barber and smashing up a hair salon, Songjiang District People's Court said Friday.

The attack occurred after the defendant, surnamed Xu, got into an argument with the barber over the haircut he had just been given, according to a court press release.

Xu was not satisfied with the cut and apparently demanded an apology. When the barber refused to give him one, Xu attacked him and a girl who also worked at the salon. Xu then smashed several of the salon's mirrors and glass doors. He also struck another person in the head with a massage mallet. The victims suffered minor injuries.

Police eventually arrived and subdued Xu.

Xu had a history of psychological problems. After he graduated from high school, he went abroad to study, but had to return early due to a mental illness, the court said. He received psychological treatment in 2005 and stopped taking medication in 2010.

The court believed Xu suffered from schizophrenia and wasn't responsible for his actions, so it suspended his one-year prison sentence.
