Midnight 'ghostly' calls scare many in Beijing

BEIJING police warned residents yesterday that if they receive a weird call after midnight they'd better call the police, Beijing News reported today.

Many Beijing residents complained that they received "ghostly" calls from number 010-67679910 after midnight. One man said he got five calls from this number yesterday and he could hear a woman or a baby crying and even a girl screaming for help.

An investigation found some people received similar calls as early as three years ago. If they call back, there would be a notification in both Chinese and English that the dialed number does not exist.

But some people said the notification sounded like someone was playing the record.

Authorities are still investigating if these calls are just a prank.
