NANCHANG, May 31(Xinhua) -- About 100 armed police began to repair partial collapses on two sections of the bank of China's longest river, the Yangtze, that have endangered some 73,000 people.

The collapses affected a 300-meter-long stretch and 1,400-meter-long section of the river in Pengze County, east China's Jiangxi Province, in early May, threatening the lives of residents living nearby.

Workers used rocks to consolidate the damaged banks. The repair work will last for about one month, said Liu Xiaoli, who is in charge of the project.

A total of 100,000 cubic meters of rock will be used in the repair work, which is expected to be completed prior to June 30, the beginning of the flood season.
