BEIJING, Nov. 29 -- A Beijing court on Friday upheld the verdict in the case of a wheelchair-bound man who was sentenced to six years in prison for setting off explosives at the Beijing Capital International Airport in July.

The ruling was delivered by Beijing Municipal No. 3 Intermediate People's Court, with the defendant's family members and journalists present.

Ji Zhongxing, 33, was found guilty for causing an explosion in a public place, according to the first-instance ruling by Chaoyang District People's Court in Beijing on Oct. 15.

Ji lodged an appeal after receiving the sentence, saying the court failed to see that he set the bomb off by accident and was too harsh on him.

A native of east China's Shandong Province, Ji set off a homemade explosive device outside the airport's Terminal 3 arrivals exit on July 20, severely injuring himself. A police officer at the scene suffered minor injuries in the explosion.

The Beijing Municipal No. 3 Intermediate People's Court rejected Ji's appeal and said the verdict delivered by Chaoyang District People's Court was based on ample evidence and was in accordance with the law.

According to the country's criminal law, anyone who causes explosions or uses other dangerous means to endanger public security without causing serious consequences shall be sentenced to a fixed-term imprisonment of no less than three years but no more than ten years.
