Pilot check facilities have been installed at the two stations around Tian'anmen square as part of the Beijing Municipal Government's plans to strengthen the city's subway security system.

Three other new security facilities will be installed in Longze station, Tiantongyuan station and Bajiao Amusement Park station by the upcoming February.

Under the pilot scheme, passengers are required to go through a security check, rather than only receiving security checks for their belongings as is current practice, to board the subway.

The new rule has been welcomed by most passengers. Under the new rule, it is hard for passengers who carry dangerous articles on themselves to avoid detection.

Yu Tao, a transit project manager at the Beijing Traffic and Transport Institute, said that the mass application of the passenger security check process in Beijing is not feasible at present, but the authority will push forward the policy according to the results of the pilot program.
